This is the first release of single malt whisky made on the re-commissioned brandy still at the famous Morris of Rutherglen winery. Casella (Yellowtail "fame") purchased the Morris business and stock and cleverly saw the opportunity to have a crack at Australian whisky and boy howdy are we glad they did. Yeah, we're laughing at the thought of Yellowtail whisky, too.
This whisky was matured in a variety of ex-fortified wine casks from Morris Rutherglen winery.
The whisky doesn't exactly leap out of the glass, but with some agitation, you can fill your nostrils with happy smells like marzipan, fruit cake, cinnamon scroll, some pastry. The palate is medium-bodied and tastes like hot cross buns, barley sugar, with a gentle five spice and mint finish. It's more single malt whisky than it is Australian whisky - those looking for the archetypal Australian GRUNT will not find it here, however, the balance and delivery of this whisky is such that it will win hearts and minds the world over. Very good, for the money - glorious. 40.0% alc/vol.
