Husband and wife team Sue & Dale Messina kicked off Bojak brewing in Dandenong in 2018 with a small brewpub powered by a 500L brew kit on the outskirts of Dandenong's CBD. It's a familiar story, a former tradie slash homebrewer decides to down tools and has a crack at brewing on a larger scale. They first came to our attention in October 2019 with Legal Mess XPA & Calypso Hazy IPA. At the time, I thought the Calypso in particular was a groundbreaking beer. The quality for the price asked was, and remains noteworthy. They've had some very solid stints in our place and found many fans locally, demand for their beers has now justified a more prominent position in our fridges, mouths and hearts. Here's a keenly priced sampler pack to introduce you to Bojak's beers, or remind some of you how good they are.
This pack includes 1x 375ml tin of the following;
Velvet King Oatmeal Stout 375ml - single $8
Medium-bodied, cruisy, roasty & toasty dry stout without any glitter, just lovely stuff.
Legal Mess XPA 375ml - single $7
Authoritative XPA; big malts, big tropical hops, gentle bitterness. XPA is a bit of an ambiguous style, but we'd be happy if more of them were like this. It's a favourite knockoff beer down at one of our local distilleries.
Side Step Hazy IPA - single $8.5
Citra, Simcoe, Galaxy; super juicy, very gentle bitterness, tonnes of flavour without excessive booze. Grouse.
Fault Line Double WCIPA - single $9.5
Centennial, Amarillo, Galaxy; Light in body, super aromatic, dry, piney, dank with a firm bitterness. This stuff slaps!
Calypso Hazy IPA - single $7.5
The beer that built the empire. I make a case that this hazy is dollar for dollar one of the best in the country. It's such an incredibly solid, consistent hazy at such a good price.
One of Those Days Double Hazy IPA 375ml - single $9.5
Citra, Victoria's Secret, Centennial; Intensely fruity, juicy, great sweetness up front and a firm, bitter piney note down back. It's a masterclass in balance, and a great highlight of Dale's skill when playing with hops.
Easy Times Lager 375ml - single $6
Simple, straightforward neck oil style Lager. This one was brewed originally for those drinkers in their tap room who may have been scared off by the bolder styles, but it equally finds favour with those who want to quietly insert something refreshing and non-confronting.
Get a Grip DDH Pale Ale - single $8.5
This is a benchmark hazy pale; just how Dale has managed to pack in as much flavour as he has at a modest 5.8% alcohol beguiles and confuses me. It's spendy for a hazy pale, but one sip will show you why.
Sweet Tooth Chocolate Stout - single $7
Dale's taken his Stout base and sauced it up with milk and dark chocolate buttons from Chocilo in Ivanhoe, it's super chocolatey with a firm bitterness and doesn't seem quite as sweet as the label or name would imply.
High Roller Double Red IPA 375ml - single $8
An awesome golden malt backbone frames a truckload of aromatic and bitter hops, carried by 7.7% of flavour-packed fun. This is an absolute winner.
