This is the first whisky release from Bendigo's Morris Lane Distillery, founded in 2018. Produced using all-Victorian grown Wheat on their small column stills before being aged 3 & 1/2 years in first fill ex-Maker's Mark Bourbon casks. The use of Wheat is clever; world-class Wheat is grown just West of the Bendigo region, the Malted Barley market is well and truly saturated, Rye is represented well by Gospel & Archie Rose, and I believe there's a distillery in Western Australia doing things with Corn.
The resultant Whisky is a hit; notes of vanilla, sweet spice, custard and shortbread on the nose, the soft, clean palate yields coconut and chocolate flavours, with a long cinnamon, nutmeg finish. Really well put together spirit and frankly, as good a first attempt as we've seen. While it might not offer the complexity and thrills that Kinglake's first release did, the balance, structure and delivery is spot on. Well worth a look, folks!
