Morris Classic Rutherglen Topaque 500ml
Topaque. What a godawful name. Sounds like a Pokemon or an antiquated insult. This is what a consultancy group came up with after a 2010 agreement with the EU to stop using the term Tokay, because there's a Tokaji in Hungary. Not that their wines are anything like ours; theirs are Botrytised and made from grapes like Furmint. Here we use Muscadelle and fortify it. Boo. They're trying to do it with Prosecco too. I'd have called it brown sticky delicious water.
Pours a deep brown colour lightening to onion brown at the edge. Smells like butterscotch, fudge, maple syrup & earl grey tea. Velvety and silky on the palate, with rich flavours of honeycomb, butterscotch, Brazil nuts, caramel, fig... I could go on. Lots going on here. Gentle spirit warmth keeps things from becoming too sticky - it's just right. Stacks of flavour, but fresh enough to keep moving. Up yours, EU.
