Clare's Secret Cabernet 2021 750ml

2021 was a ripper of a year for wine in South Australia, the best in ages. Young gun winemaker Angus Wardlaw didn't have to do much to the fruit to make the wine sing. An open top ferment, a soak on skins, press to a mix of French oak hogsheads and Bob's your mother's brother.

Pours an appealing inky purple and smells sensational; intensely perfumed, juicy Ribena like aromas leap from the glass, lurking underneath there's a pile of Autumn leaves. The juicy characters continue into the early palate where there's an explosion of ripe blackberry which yields to a creamy toasty warm spice note, a hint of mint and tomato leaf towards the back, tannins are quite fine, but firm. Finishes clean and dry with a lovely long lingering spiced berry aftertaste. Great now, but will improve for five years and drink well for at least a decade.
