We've been on the hunt for a good value "old school" Chardonnay for some time now. It's been fairly elusive, as the trend for the past few years has been all about neutral oak and wild ferments. The buttery and oaky examples of the late 90s and early 00s seems to have been relegated to California, which comes with a big price ticket. While this isn't a complete butter and oak bomb, it certainly is a doff of the cap in that direction.
It pours a pale gold colour and smells like nougat, biscuit, cashew, toast and stonefruit. The palate is generous, but not overblown - big boned, peaches and cream with a little buttered toast in the background. The finish is super dry and crisp with a very long toasty aftertaste. It's much bigger than Chardonnay we have previously had at this price point, but it's beautifully balanced, and that's what makes this such a fun drink.
