Alcohol-removed wines have been a bit tricky for us, the ones we've tried so far have been so 'grape juicy,' or excessively sweet, but we have continued the search and finally unearthed what we think is a winner. This is a Tempranillo made from grapes grown in the La Mancha region in the centre of Spain. It's deep purple in colour and smells legit; plum, spice, earth, herbs and spice. The palate is medium-bodied and ticks many boxes - again with the plum, a touch of cherry and berry, and a subtle sour cola lolly end note with spiciness persisting. The highlight, and what sets it apart from others for mine is the finish, there's a bit of grip and tannin, and there's a little firmness to it that pushes pleasure buttons in my head. While there's no doubting it's non-groggy grog, I reckon it's interesting enough to scratch the itch, and hope you do too.
